Essential Job Duties
The primary purpose of this position is to support the Cooperative Extension NewHanover County Consumer Horticulture program and volunteers. This includes serving asthe main point of contact for the Extension Master Gardener volunteers, coordination andsupport of the daily Plant Clinic functions through scheduling trained volunteers, andcoordination and support of other community outreach efforts of the Extension MasterGardener Volunteers.

expertise of NC State University and NC A&T State University. Through educational programs, publications and events, Cooperative Extension agents deliver unbiased, research-based information to North Carolina citizens.

Other Work/Responsibilities
Schedule, support and communicate with volunteers.
Schedule volunteers to support staff daily.
Schedule volunteers to work at off-site plant clinic – clinic services include identifying plants/pests/pathogens and recommending appropriate actions.
Train and oversee volunteers in use of technology including: computer, microscope, video, websites, digital documents, webinar systems.
Communication with volunteers through various methods including emails, phone calls, newsletters, notices.
Prepare and submit soil and plant tissue samples to appropriate labs; order and maintain inventory of submission materials.
Stock, maintain and enhance educational pamphlet and flyer inventory for Arboretum information kiosks, plant clinic and lobby displays.
Assist in volunteer coordination for Arboretum events, including Annual Spring Plant Sale, Art in the Arboretum, Pumpkin Palooza, Native Plant Festival and more.
Support Consumer Horticulture Agent in Extension programming and record keeping as needed, including Extension Master Gardener Volunteer database and Extension Reporting System.
Schedule Nature at Home visits for volunteers, and schedule Arboretum guided tours for groups led by trained EMGs.
Answer Consumer Horticulture questions for Plant Clinic clients when needed.

Work Schedule
Monday - Friday, between 8-5, 40 hours a week, occasional nights and weekends as the need arises.
Minimum Experience/Education
The minimum requirement for employment with the North Carolina Cooperative Extension (NCCE) is a high-school diploma or equivalent. Advanced training in related fields is preferred.
Department Required Skills
General knowledge of horticulture.
General computer skills, including word processing, email, database management, spread sheet, webinar and social media.
Engaging personality for work with volunteers.
Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education
Extension Master Gardener Certification or similar horticulture training.
Website management.
Secondary educational coursework in science.
Volunteer management experience.
Required License or Certification
Possession of a valid North Carolina driver’s license.
