About the Department
The Benefits, Employee Wellness and Work Life unit of NC State University administers statutory and voluntary benefit programs, as authorized by the General Assembly of North Carolina, the Office of State Personnel, and the University Group Insurance and Benefits Committee for over 8,000 faculty and staff employees. The University Benefits office is responsible for managing the overall design, administration, communication, implementation and maintenance of benefit programs. In addition to health/welfare and retirement benefits, the University Benefits office also has responsibility of directing many other support programs such as Leave Administration.
Benefits, Employee Wellness and Work Life is part of University Human Resources (UHR). NC State University Human Resources provides services to employees subject to the NC Human Resources Act (”SHRA” employees) as well as faculty, administrators and professionals exempt from the NC Human Resources Act (“EHRA” employees), temporary employees, and student employees. NC State is a non-unionized environment and part of the University of North Carolina System.
Essential Job Duties
The Human Resources Benefits Specialist serves as part of the University Human Resources Benefits team and will provide oversight for eligibility, enrollment, compliance, reporting, problem resolution, and risk management for all health and supplemental benefit plans including the Affordable Care Act (ACA) plan. This position manages the process for evaluating qualified life events regarding employee benefits, changes, and approval. As part of the Benefits team, this position will assist walk-in and call-in customers that need quick answers and will be responsible for the management and triage of benefits cases in HRNow.
Other Responsibilities
This position will support the work of the department as needed and assigned by the Assistant Director and Director of Employee Benefits and Programs.
Minimum Experience/Education
Bachelor’s degree; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Other Required Qualifications
- Strong computer skills required with a proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
- Exceptional customer service and communication skills.
- Strong analytical, organizational and problem solving skills.
- Demonstrated experience communicating/supporting customers across multiple tiers of the organization effectively.
- Ability to multi-task and see projects through to the end.
- Basic ability to understand and interpret multiple plans documents, policies, procedures, and legal requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
- Two (2) years of direct applicable benefits administration work experience with in-depth knowledge of federal and state leave laws and entitlements including the Affordable Care Act (ACA).
- Experience with HR Information Systems (PeopleSoft)
