Essential Job Duties
The senior editor provides editorial oversight, guidance and leadership to ensure that key communications initiatives are planned and implemented in accordance with communications best practices, the university’s brand and the strategic goals of UComm and the university. In addition, the position creates original written content in accordance with the abovementioned priorities. The senior editor reports to the director of Editorial Services.
- The position provides copyediting and proofreading services for print and digital materials produced by UComm’s Marketing Communications unit, such as advertisements, brochures, websites, email campaigns and a wide variety of other assets. In this capacity, the position functions as a guardian of voice, tone and editorial style in accordance with NC State’s brand; leads efforts to maintain and improve the quality and consistency of all communications; and ensures that all materials are produced in accordance with key strategic messaging priorities.
- The position is the principal editor for key central communications initiatives, such as the chancellor’s fall address and the chancellor’s annual report.
- The position will rely on an intimate familiarity with AP style and with editorial style in general to implement NC State’s specific editorial style in all writing, editing and proofreading projects. In addition, the position is responsible for maintaining and updating the editorial style guidelines on NC State’s brand site.
- The position conducts training and provides consultation for UComm colleagues and campus partners in areas including writing, editing, editorial style, voice and tone, and other communications topics.
- The position writes news and feature stories for the Bulletin, NC State’s faculty/staff e-newsletter, and for other campus partners.
- The position writes additional original content as needed for such assets as web copy, live remarks and interview scripts, among others.
- The position directly supervises two professional staff in the Editorial Services unit:
- A writer and editor who manages the university’s Email Mass Distribution System; writes news and feature stories for the Bulletin and for other campus partners through UComm’s Marketing Communications unit; and provides editing and proofreading backup for the senior editor.
- A writer and editor who manages the university calendar and who provides writing and editing support to University Human Resources.

Minimum Experience/Education
Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Other Required Qualifications
- Strong news-writing and feature-writing skills, including the ability to conduct interviews and background research and to write compelling, engaging stories.
- Superb copyediting skills, including the ability to catch errors in spelling, grammar and factuality; correct errors in editorial style; impose brand-specific voice and tone; and improve clarity and comprehensibility.
- Ability to perform highly meticulous proofreading of fully designed print and digital communications assets, with superior attention to detail.
- Expert knowledge of AP style.
- General competency in MS Office and Google apps.
- Collaboration skills conducive to building productive relationships with partners and stakeholders throughout the university.
- Ability to develop and implement strategic communications.
- Ability to grasp discipline-specific information and recast it in writing for a general audience without introducing errors or inaccuracies.
- Ability to manage communications projects to ensure timely completion while satisfying client requirements and achieving UComm’s strategic goals.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, complex, team-oriented environment.
- Ability to work independently, be creative and exercise initiative.
- Ability to consistently meet deadlines while delivering high-quality work.
Preferred Qualifications
- Ability to write different types of copy for a wide range of audiences and purposes, including such assets as web copy, interview scripts and live remarks, among others.
- Ability to develop communications strategy.
- Experience with the WordPress content management system.
- Experience with the Mailchimp email marketing platform.
- General understanding of public relations, issues management and media relations.
- Familiarity with a land-grant university environment.
- Familiarity with a Research I university environment.
