University Advancement (UA) secures support for NC State University by raising funds from private sources, engaging current and future alumni, building a culture of philanthropy, and enhancing the university’s reputation through integrated marketing and communications. Led by Vice Chancellor Brian Sischo, UA fulfills its mission through the operations of four main units: University Development, which seeks and obtains philanthropic support; Alumni Engagement and Annual Giving, which builds and fosters relationships and a culture of philanthropy with alumni and other constituencies; University Communications and Marketing, NC State’s dedicated communications agency; and Advancement Services, which provides information management and other key support functions to all University Advancement units.
Alumni Engagement and Annual Giving (AEAG) uses a wide variety of platforms, channels and methods to engage the university’s alumni in mutually rewarding long-term relationships. The unit also procures and increases annual gifts to the university by leveraging existing relationships and creating new ones. Alumni Engagement and Annual Giving collaborates with partners across campus to plan and implement a coordinated, integrated strategy aimed at increasing support for the university and building a culture of philanthropy within the university and across its constituencies.
Essential Job Duties
The Executive Director of Engagement is a member of the leadership team for the Office of Alumni Engagement and Annual Giving and reports directly to the Associate Vice Chancellor. The Executive Director is charged with supporting the integration of engagement activities that lead and support the development of philanthropy toward NC State University. They will provide oversight of strategic engagement, a robust volunteer program, collaborating with colleges and units across the university, and programmatic activities for NC State alumni and friends. Engagement will occur across multiple platforms, utilizing a digital-first approach to reach diverse constituencies and to keep affinity strong.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
- Create and deliver a variety of programming opportunities for students, alumni and friends that promote comprehensive understanding of the University’s mission and priorities, increase engagement and build positive and productive relationships;
- Work collaboratively, collegially and respectfully with colleagues across University Advancement, the Provost’s Office, University Athletics, and the colleges and units; serve as a critical and trusted partner displaying high integrity, honesty and trustworthiness;
- Establish and build a strategic network of relationships with a wide range of members of the university community (including alumni, friends, parents, students, staff, and faculty), locally, regionally, and nationally;
- Capture contact, biographical and career information of alumni via surveys, projects (e.g. alumni online community), correspondence, contact reports, events, postal returns, etc. to assist with accurate and complete records of alumni in the CRM;
- Attend University, University Advancement, Office of Alumni Engagement and Annual Giving events and meetings;
- Partner with Director of Admissions on alumni involvement in the admissions process;
- Partner with the Director of the Career Center to plan the growth and accessibility of career networking services for students and alumni;
- Collaborate with development colleagues to increase philanthropic support from alumni; routinely identify and qualify alumni prospects for leadership annual/major/principal gifts; communicate development related activities via contact reports filed in the CRM and periodic attendance at development officer meetings;
- Oversee and balance the budget for Alumni Engagement; within the annual program budget, manage existing and/or additional costs for alumni programs, services and communications;
- Raise funds for select special projects and events in collaboration and close coordination with the Office of Annual Giving and college frontline fundraisers;
- Supervise the Alumni Engagement team which includes Volunteer Engagement, Engagement Experiences, and Alumni Engagement functions; build trust-based, positive and authentic working relationships; follow university and industry best practices for performance management; model desired behaviors;
- Commit to maintaining and promoting a diverse, inclusive and equitable workplace environment.
Other Responsibilities:
- Assist the Associate Vice Chancellor of Alumni Engagement and Annual Giving with any other matters or responsibilities as deemed appropriate.
- Partner with the leadership of the Office of Alumni Engagement and Annual Giving on strategies that complement and support the vision, mission, and goals for the office.
- Attend a variety of events throughout the year; regular travel and occasional night and weekend work is required.
Other Responsibilities
- Serves as the building liaison for the Park Alumni Center, providing support for general building operations and maintenance.
- Coordinates the use of alumni data with the Office of Advancement Services.
- Routinely travels throughout the state and nation to recruit volunteers, maintain relations and manage, preside over alumni events.
- Assists in the recruitment of alumni to represent the university at student award programs and university installations.
Minimum Education and Experience
BA/BS required and acceptable with at least five years of related experience, preferably in a University setting.
Other Required Qualifications
- Comprehensive knowledge and holistic understanding of current theory and practice in the alumni relations and engagement field.
- Proven ability to develop and execute a comprehensive alumni programming, communications and engagement strategy.
- Demonstrated track record of success in leading, mentoring and inspiring staff to achieve goals and fostering an attitude of staff responsiveness.
- Demonstrated analytical skills with the ability to recognize opportunities, to identify critical, high return activities, prioritize them to attain goals, and implement appropriate changes to programs.
- Excellent social and customer service skills; ability to take initiative and exercise sound judgment;
- Strong verbal and written communication skills required, as well as the ability to interact and collaborate with all University constituents.
- Volunteer management experience.
- Proficiency in MS Office, Google applications and familiarity with customer relations management (CRM) database utilization.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Preferred Qualifications
- Demonstrated experience in constituent engagement at an institution with a large alumni base
- Master’s degree
- Familiarity with NC State University
