Position Summary/Purpose of Position:
This position is a graduate assistantship in the BSOS Feller Center for Academic Advising and Career Planning and offers an in-depth educational and professional position to a student working simultaneously towards a graduate degree. The areas of concentration for this assistantship include: general academic advising, program planning and implementation, and general administrative functions.
- Provide academic advising to students interested or enrolled in majors in the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences.
- Work with students in academic difficulty, including helping them articulate problems and find solutions.
- Refer students to appropriate campus services.
- Conduct academic audits with students, including explaining graduation requirements, scrutinizing transcripts and correcting errors, and communicating with departments as necessary.
- Work in conjunction with the new student orientation coordinator to plan, implement, conduct and evaluate summer and winter orientation programs.
- Teach UNIV 100, a semester long orientation one-credit course for freshmen.
- Conduct graduation planning workshop sessions for new students.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education:
This position is only open to Graduate Students currently enrolled at the University of Maryland, College Park.
Experience:
Experience in student personnel administration, counseling, or academic advising.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Ability to manage graduate level course work along with work responsibilities.
- Ability to handle work with computer-assisted advising technology, word processing, and databases.
- Excellent assessment and communication skills.
- Organized, creative problem solver, effective in time management, enthusiastic, detailed oriented and flexible.
Additional Information:
Duration:
This position is a one-year renewable assistantship coinciding with the University’s academic calendar and is a 12 – month graduate assistant staff position. The position follows the faculty rather than the student holiday calendar.
Remuneration:
The salary for the position is $30,914 plus tuition (up to 10 credits each Fall and Spring semester) and may be higher depending on class standing in graduate program. The average work week is 20 hours.
