Job Description
DIRECTOR OF PLATFORMS, INFRASTRUCTURE AND DATA SERVICES, Office of Research Computing and Data (ORCD), to serve as the lead technical architect and administrator of the newly created ORCD Platforms group. Leadership duties include overseeing and implementing technical and architectural aspects of research computing by creating reliable and sustainable systems to meet the Institute’s wide-ranging research computing and data goals; architecting, deploying, monitoring, and supporting reliable state-of-the-art computer, network and storage systems, and technologies for delivering solutions for research computing and data services; and managing the underlying infrastructure, staff, and computing assets to deliver high levels of availability and reliability.
In September of 2022, MIT announced the formation of ORCD, a new effort to ensure that researchers have access to the advanced computing resources and data management services they need to do their best work. Reporting to the MIT vice president for research, ORCD has a campus-wide role and responsibility for research computing and data services for the entire MIT community.

REQUIRED: bachelor’s degree in a related field; at least ten years’ relevant work experience in either deeply-technical fields and/or computational research; at least four years of experience directly leading and supervising a team of full-time staff members; demonstrated customer service orientation, commitment to excellence in technology delivery, and experience delivering complex and functional computational services to a wide and distributed community; understanding of large-scale advanced research computing environments focused mainly on high performance and high throughput technical computing (HPC/HTC); expertise with public cloud/hyperscale providers, infrastructure as code, parallel filesystems, automation, observability, visualization, and data analytics; experience designing, building, and delivering modern HPC, distributed, or at-scale computing solutions.
