The Department of Romance Languages and Literatures seeks applications from qualified UM Graduate Students to teach discussion sections and grade for the Italian 240 course for the Fall 2023 term.
This course incorporates history, testimony, and movies to analyze a social phenomenon viewed by some as typically Italian: the mafia. From its origins in nineteenth-century Sicily to its global reach today, we study the mafia as a business model, a cultural phenomenon, a social structure, a form of terrorism, and a challenge to international policing. This course is taught for R&E credit. Topics covered include anti-southern bias in Italy, anti-Italian bias in the US, and anti-Black racism in the US.
Successful applicants will have the following responsibilities:
Lectures are Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1:00-2:30. Discussion sections meet Fridays from 10-11, 12-1, and 1-2.
