About the Department
The Precision Sustainable Agriculture (PSA) program is a network of researchers across the country collaborating to develop integrated knowledge-intensive sustainable agriculture practices into a precision framework to maximize farm productivity, and sustainability through the use of an information ecology that connects farms, data, tools, and people for optimal, real-time decision making. The PSA program is housed within the Department of Crop and Soil Sciences which encompasses diverse disciplines in research extension and teaching. The department’s mission is to develop future leaders in crop, soil and environmental sciences, improve crop plants and products, devise effective and sustainable crop production systems, devise effective and sustainable soil management techniques in both agriculture and urban settings; and disseminate crop, soil, and environmental science knowledge for the benefit of users and producers of food, feed turf, biofuels and fiber in North Carolina, the nation and the world.
Essential Job Duties
As an API/database designer, the incumbent will build a new data center with private cloud and public cloud capabilities, overhaul existing applications and integrate new and existing platforms.
The position will create a system to store user interaction history and application data and have the ability to interact with newly created databases. The position will create interoperability between cover crop decision support tools setting API standards among them.
a. Architect new database schemas for applications using PostgreSQL
b. Convert existing locally hosted databases to Azure platform
c. Develop new API’s using a modern framework (Node.js/Express, Plython/Django, Python/Flask, serverless functions) to interact with various databases.
d. Work with design team to create solutions to integrate with other technologies being developed at the same time.
e. Other projects and duties as assigned.
Minimum Education and Experience
- Master’s Degree with 2 years experience, or a Bachelor’s Degree and 1-2+ years experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and relevent experience.
- Experience developing API’s and designing database schemas.
Other Required Qualifications
- Strong proficiency with PostgreSQL, Node.js/Express.js, Git.
- Ability to work independently within a team.
- Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills.
- Project tracking techniques.
Preferred Qualifications
- 3 + years directly related experience.
- Experience with database schema design.
- Strong proficiency with MongoDB, and a python API framework (Flask and/or Django), experience with Azure services
