Position Summary | Indiana University Bloomington (IUB) seeks a creative, knowledgeable, and accomplished faculty leader, with strong multi-disciplinary relationships and experiences, to serve as Vice Provost for Faculty and Academic Affairs (VPFAA). The VPFAA is a senior administrative appointment at IUB that provides vision and leads campus-wide strategic and operational efforts to support and enhance faculty and academic life and promote academic excellence. The Bloomington campus enrolls over 47,000 students who learn, explore, grow, and pursue research in over 100 research centers and institutes , and more than 250 graduate and bachelor’s programs within its 17 schools and colleges . The VPFAA directly supports nearly 3,500 full- and part-time faculty and librarians, nearly 2,500 student academic appointees, along with postdoctoral researchers and research assistants. The new VPFAA will support all matters of academic administration, policy, and planning and shape implementation of strategic campus initiatives that involve faculty and academic excellence. The VPFAA will also provide wide-ranging resources and support for faculty to find community and belonging and excel in their research, creative activities, teaching, and service. The VPFAA reports to the Provost and Executive Vice President of the Bloomington campus and serves on the Provost’s leadership team. The position also works with academic deans and other senior leaders on the Bloomington campus, as well as with the Bloomington Faculty Council, faculty policy committees in the academic units, and faculty leaders across IU. ROLE OF THE VICE PROVOST Core responsibilities for the VPFAA include: · Overseeing and supporting recruitment of all academic personnel, including implementation and oversight of policies governing all academic appointments (tenure- and nontenure-line faculty, librarians, student academic appointees, postdoctoral researchers, and research assistants); collaborating on partner/spousal hires · Leading faculty support, development, and community building at the campus-level; facilitating leadership training and programs; directing orientation activities for new faculty, professional development for department chairs and directors, support for emeriti faculty, and targeted initiatives and support for identified groups and populations, particularly faculty from historically excluded communities. · Advocating for and influencing the development of impactful academic programs, in collaboration with academic leaders, campus offices for undergraduate, graduate and professional education, faculty, and staff; promoting teaching excellence and student success through high impact learning experiences, continuous program improvement, and innovative pedagogies. · Leading the VPFAA office faculty and professional staff and core operational functions, including data, computing, finance, and administration. · Overseeing the annual cycle of reviews for tenure-probationary faculty and managing the tenure and promotion process; issuing recommendations on tenure and promotion cases to the Provost. · Providing advice and guidance to academic deans, as well as the Provost when needed, on a broad range of personnel issues, including sabbaticals and other leaves of absence, salary issues, discipline and conduct issues, grievances, and mediation. · Supporting faculty by managing faculty grievances procedures, including through necessary inquiries or investigations and remediation steps as appropriate; support implementation of the Student Academic Ethics policy. · Serving as a resource and guide for schools and departments related to academic appointments and academic human resources. · Producing and supporting analysis of key faculty-related data, including compensation, composition, and career-trajectory trends within the campus academic community; assisting with analyses on faculty research productivity, areas of scholarly expertise, and honorific awards; and administering periodic faculty engagement surveys. · Stewarding all records for IUB academic appointments, faculty activity, and CV data. · Leading faculty recognition and celebrations at the campus-level; overseeing campus faculty awards processes and celebrations of faculty achievements. · Serving on the Bloomington Faculty Council, consulting on and promulgating Council policies. · Collaborating with senior leaders across IU campuses as the Bloomington campus’s primary representative for university-wide academic matters. · Representing IUB with key external stakeholders on faculty and academic matters, including alumni, peers, and national higher education organizations. · Serving as the institutional liaison for IUB with the Big-10 Academic Alliance (BTAA) for all matters related to faculty support. · Facilitating special projects to advance the academic mission of the university. |
Basic Qualifications | QUALIFICATIONS IU seeks an exceptional leader who is passionate about faculty and faculty development, committed to academic excellence, and prescient and optimistic about the institution and its future potential. IU seeks candidates possessing a current tenured faculty appointment at Indiana University and have achieved the rank of full professor. This is a 12-month appointment, with the expectation of a three-to-five-year initial appointment and is renewable. The candidate should also have a substantial and successful record of working with fellow faculty. In addition, the ideal candidate will have many of the following: · Commitment to advocating for academic freedom, scholarly excellence, collegiality, peer review, and shared governance. · Extensive knowledge in areas broadly relating to trends in faculty recruitment and careers, and specifically relating to IUB academic governance and appointment policies. · Broad intellectual interests and the ability to work with faculty and campus leaders across diverse academic programs at IUB. · Substantial administrative experience. · An open, inclusive, and collaborative leadership style. · Sound judgment and discretion. · Ability to inspire and provide leadership to a large, diverse, and outstanding academic community. |
