Position Summary/Purpose of Position:
The Department of Economics is seeking a full-time Academic Advisor. The person in this position advises undergraduate students on degree requirements, course selection, experiential learning opportunities (e.g., internships, study abroad, research), and postgraduation planning. The advisor interprets, explains and implements departmental, college, and campus policies and will also carry out different activities that support students’ career readiness and the department’s undergraduate program. Strong organizational, administrative, interpersonal, and communication skills are essential. Competency with both general office software (including word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, and web-based applications) is necessary, as is the ability to quickly learn and master UM-specific policies and computer applications (including U-Achieve, SIS, ELMS, TerpEngage, Advise-on-the-Web).
Responsibilities include:
- Working with a population of students who possess a wide variety of interests and aptitudes and determining each students’ specific needs in order to provide individualized guidance
- Providing students with accurate information on curriculum requirements and assisting with course selection
- Conducting academic audits and degree clearances
- Reviewing and compiling student records for new student orientations, leading orientation presentations, creating/updating orientation presentations and materials as needed
- Managing the departmental major declaration process, processing paperwork, and creating/updating major declaration materials and online course modules as needed
- Maintaining accurate advising-related records, including student files, training manuals, and forms; ensures accuracy of information published on the undergraduate website
- Aiding students with career-related decisions and assisting in the creation and implementation of career outreach activities
- Planning and implementing communications strategies to effectively convey information to large numbers of students
- Utilizing databases to compile statistical profiles of various groupings of students
- Assuming other duties as assigned by the Associate Director and the Director of Undergraduate Studies
Minimum Qualifications:
Education:
A Bachelor’s Degree is required.
Experience:
1-2 years of relevant experience is required.
Preferences:
Preferences:
- Degree preferred in any of the behavioral or social sciences, business, higher education, counseling, or a related field.
- Experience in higher education advising and administrative support strongly preferred.
- Knowledge of University of Maryland, College Park requirements, policies, and information management systems is desirable.
- Demonstrated skills in creating communication visuals and social media highly desirable.

Physical Demands
There may be occasions when the incumbent will need to work outside their normal work shift to accommodate department events.

The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading. Work is performed in an office environment and requires the ability to operate standard office equipment and keyboards. Must have the ability to lift and small carry parcels, packages, and other items. The position occasionally requires walking some distance to attend meetings.
