Position Summary/Purpose of Position:
The Assistant Director, Student Support Services, Career Readiness at the Universities at Shady Grove (USG) in Rockville, MD, will provide leadership and vision in the establishment of policy and procedures to effectively deliver comprehensive career services. The Assistant Director oversees three major department areas: academic outreach and partnerships, direct services for students, and career readiness programming. Key responsibilities to include, but not limited to direction of the Center’s student services portfolio, academic partner outreach and partnerships, career coaching and consultation for all undergraduate, graduate and professional students enrolled in programs at USG, implementation of co-curricular career readiness programs, development of a robust portfolio of professional development activities for students, quantitative and qualitative assessment and reporting, internal and external presentations, group career development activities, event planning, and development of programs and services tailored to industry sectors (hubs) at USG. This position is also responsible for managing a team of career advisors.
The Universities at Shady Grove (USG) is a unique, highly successful regional higher education center developed as a part of the University System of Maryland. The campus offers more than 80 undergraduate and graduate degree programs from nine Maryland public universities on one convenient campus in Montgomery County. USG helps prepare students for rewarding careers in the region’s most high-demand fields. Students who complete their coursework on the USG campus graduate with a degree from one of its nine partner universities. Through on-campus services such as academic coaching, career advising, internship preparation, personal counseling, and leadership training, students leave the USG campus with the academic skills and real-world experiences needed for successful careers.
Position Information: Position assigned to the Universities at Shady Grove located in Rockville, Maryland.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education:
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university required.
Experience:
- Minimum of 7 years of professional experience in career services, student affairs, human resources, or workforce development required.
- Minimum of 2 years supervising others; experience to include some career coaching, and development of student related programming required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge in the areas of strategy implementation, service delivery, project management, performance management, strategic partnerships, and talent management.
- Knowledge of policies, practices, and procedures involved in a career services operation, including knowledge of business and industry opportunities.
- Knowledge of career readiness competencies, general employment guidelines and trends and regional workforce needs.
- Knowledge and skills in the areas of career coaching and consultation, career readiness programming, project management, and event planning.
- Skills in leadership
- Ability to work well both individually and within a group; ability to successfully collaborate with partner institutions, partner career centers, and academic program representatives.
- Organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Skills in written communication and public speaking.
- Interpersonal skills consistent with counseling and building developmentally supportive relationships with students.
- Customer service skills and an ability to work in a fast-paced work environment.

Preferences:
- Master’s degree with an emphasis on higher education, student affairs, workforce development, business management, human resources or other closely related field.
- Previous professional experience with the University System of Maryland, its partner institutions, regional higher education centers, or other college/university setting strongly preferred.
- Some experience with STEM populations, graduate/professional students, nontraditional students, veterans, or other special populations.
- Previous professional experience and understanding of the Montgomery County and State of Maryland regional business communities.

Career Coaching certification by NACE, PARW/CC, NCDA, ICF or other professionally recognized certifying agency.

Professional, office working environment. Physical activity may include transporting informational materials to and from various outreach events. Regional travel to partner institutions, employer sites, workforce and community events, and other meetings may be required. Limited travel to regional and national conferences may also be required.
