Job Summary
The Assistant Director of Content Services reports directly to the Director of Library Services and provides leadership, vision, and support for the Content Services department including supervising full-time and part-time staff. This position oversees and coordinates collection development, acquisitions, cataloging, electronic resources, OER program support, the archival program, data management, College copyright guidance, and improving accessibility in online environments.
Essential Responsibilities and Duties
Oversee the Content Services Department of Library Services:
- Provide vision and direction for the department, which is made up of acquisitions, cataloging, archives, digital repositories, open education resources program support, and educational initiatives.
- Provide leadership, support, and supervision for full-time librarians and other staff in the Content Services department. This includes hiring, training, evaluating, mentoring, facilitating professional development, and taking corrective action if necessary.
Oversee and direct the collection development process for Library Services:
- Oversee the development of collections in all formats including print, audio/visual, electronic, digitized, and archival materials. Chair the Collection Development committee, including planning meetings, setting priorities, and utilizing most relevant purchasing and licensing models.
- Oversee the library acquisitions budget to ensure the efficient and effective use of resources, including coordinating and negotiating with vendors, and managing contracts and license agreements.
- Participate on the statewide Utah Academic Library Consortium (UALC) Collection Development committee to help plan statewide resource sharing.
- Ensure library collections are diverse and accessible to meet the needs, interests, and abilities of all the people the College serves.
Perform data collection and analysis for Content Services and participate on the library data committee:
- Collect, analyze, manage, and utilize data related to physical and electronic collections and their usage to maintain and improve collections and to meet the goals of the department and SLCC.
- Gather and report required data to the proper internal and external agencies.
- Participate in the planning, executing, analyzing, and using of user surveys to ensure the adequacy of resources and accessibility.
Help manage the systems and software required to support library collections, including the current automated library system, discovery tools, content databases and supporting tools:
- In coordination with library and OIT staff, and product vendors manage systems by adjusting settings and configurations, running updates and upgrades, and some trouble shooting.
- Stay informed about current and upcoming technologies and systems that support library function and coordinate the purchase of systems when required.
- Help ensure systems meet the needs of library staff and end users, including making sure systems meet standards of universal accessibility.
- Run reports and gather data from library systems as needed.
Oversee and manage copyright efforts for Library Services and provide copyright guidance at the College. Support library efforts related to the archival program and the OER program:
- Provide copyright guidance, support, and training for college personnel in collaboration with legal counsel and in compliance with college Copyright and IP policies.
- Oversee the implementation and use of copyright compliance tools such as a CCC license for the college and copyright documentation and reporting software.
- Provide support for the archival program which includes physical archives, digital archives, online institutional repository, digitization, and special collections.
- Support content services staff who collaborate with the Open SLCC team to provide library support for the OER Program at the college.
Provide library leadership:
- Collaborate with Library Services’ administrative team on accreditation, assessment, marketing and outreach, strategic planning, reporting, budgeting, and policies and procedures to ensure the overall effectiveness of Library Services.
- Assist the Director of Library Services as needed and manage Library Services in the Director’s absence.
- Represent Library Services and participate in college-wide initiatives such as universal access; becoming a Hispanic Serving Institution; equity, diversity, and inclusion; copyright and intellectually property; and strategic planning.
Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Master’s degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited institution or an equivalent degree recognized by ALA.
Five (5) or more years of direct professional full-time experience including three (3) years of supervisory experience.
Trade off in experience/education on a 2:1 basis.
Part-time related work experience may be substituted for full-time work experience on a prorated basis.
Preferred Qualifications
Two (2) or more years of experience in an academic library.
Demonstrated experience providing guidance and training on copyright for an institution.
Bilingual or multilingual abilities.

- Ability to support library print and digital archives, institutional repository, and special collections.
- Ability to study and improve end user experience with library content and services.
- Experience with automated Library systems (ALS/ILS) used for acquisitions, cataloging, searching, and circulating library materials.
- Familiarity with online education, learning management, digital content management and repository systems.
- Familiarity with updating websites via visual and text editors.
- Experience with data collection, assessment, use, and reporting.
- Knowledge of Copyright Law and exceptions and limitations as they apply to academic institutions.
- Knowledge of ADA requirements and accessibility standards for content and systems.
- Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of diverse people, ability, culture, and ethnic background, to maintain good working relationships across the College.
- Ability to work with all groups in diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic background of community college students, faculty, and staff, including those with disabilities.
Non-Essential Responsibilities and Duties
Participate on various college committees, task forces, and associations as appropriate.
