About the Department
The Department of Computer Science is an academic teaching and research department in the College of Engineering. It is a large and complex unit that encompasses research intensive, teaching intensive and professional activities. It is one of the largest such departments in the nation by the number of faculty and students, and its total budget and size are comparable to, or larger than, a number of NC State University colleges and divisions.
Essential Job Duties
The Center for Educational Informatics (CEI) at North Carolina State University is seeking a Research Scientist to participate in research and development activities for projects investigating artificial intelligence (AI)-driven learning environments. This position involves contributing to ongoing research programs and assisting with the development of new research programs. The ideal candidate will have excellent written communication skills and prior experience contributing toward the design, development, and evaluation of advanced learning technologies, as well as experience guiding junior researchers.
CEI is home to the newly awarded National Science Foundation AI Institute for Engaged Learning. The Institute’s AI-driven learning environments build on its advances in core AI on natural language processing, computer vision, and machine learning. The Institute’s research is also informed by connections with diverse stakeholders to ensure that the Institute’s learning environments are ethically designed and promote diversity, equity, and inclusion. Responsibilities of this position include the following:
- Lead and contribute toward the design, development, testing, maintenance, and documentation of AI-driven learning environments and related technologies.
- Work closely with researchers and education stakeholders (e.g., teachers, students, educators) to identify and refine system requirements.
- Lead projects by creating research agendas, project plans, and schedules as well as monitoring progress according to schedules and providing status reports.
- Participate in fielding and deploying software systems at user sites (e.g., schools, museums, community centers).
- Analyze user behavior through qualitative and quantitative techniques using multimodal data, including interaction trace log data, video/audio data, physiological data, observational data, and surveys/questionnaires.
- Collaborate with faculty, staff, postdocs, and students to solve complex research problems.
- ● Stay up-to-date on the research literature in advanced learning technologies, artificial intelligence in education, and related areas.
- ● Lead the preparation of technical papers and project reports describing the research as well as overseeing the publication pipeline associated with the research.
- ● Contribute toward preparation of research grant proposals to obtain external funding.
- ● Give demonstrations and presentations of AI-based software systems and participate in meetings and conferences as needed.

Minimum Education and Experience
Relevant Ph.D degree (or relevant terminal degree), or relevant Master’s degree with at least 5 years of formal post-degree professional work experience.
Other Required Qualifications
- Ability to quickly learn and follow established development processes and standards.
- Ability to take constructive criticism resulting from peer reviews, software testing, and client feedback.
- Strong written and oral communication skills required, including the ability to work collaboratively with a diverse team.
Preferred Qualifications
- Ph.D. degree in Computer Science, Psychology, Education, or closely related field.
- A strong publication record in AI-driven learning technologies is a plus.
- Programming expertise including experience with languages such as C#, Java, Python, and C++. Knowledgeable about best practices for software design, development, and maintenance with demonstrated creativity in solving complex problems.
- Experience working with statistical packages such as SPSS, SAS, and R as well as previous experience conducting studies in K-12 classroom environments is desired.
