The CALS Business Operations (CBO) is an administrative unit within the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and has oversight of the College’s centralized financial and research administration services including, Business Services, Budgets and Planning, Research Administration, and Operational Support. CALS Contracts & Grants, (Office of Research Office Administration), resides under the CALS CBO umbrella and provides complete cradle to grave sponsored program administration and support in identifying funding sources, assisting faculty with proposal development, monitoring/overseeing management of sponsored projects, while ensuring university compliance with contract/grant fiscal and regulatory requirements. CALS ORA is the administrative unit responsible for ensuring the college remains in compliance with federal and state policies pertaining to research. CALS ORA is the contact point for federal and state audits, both fiscal and programmatic, on contracts and grants awarded in/to the college. This service office is designed to serve all faculty and staff needs for externally funded projects and programs.
Essential Job Duties
The CALS Office of Research Administration (CALS ORA) is committed to providing efficient and effective service to the faculty and staff throughout the college in support of the research enterprise.
As part of a unit with three primary missions – proposal development and review, regulatory compliance, and fiscal compliance – CALS ORA provides services and support to ensure faculty have the resources and encouragement necessary to successfully and legally conduct their programs. CALS ORA provides enhanced service to faculty and staff while protecting the university from unrecovered revenue, disallowed costs, and non-compliance. CALS ORA remains centralized for staff reporting purposes and in-service delivery, with the needed resources deployed to specific units.
The Post-Award Consultant position is empowered to act independently in making decisions and authorizing actions such as seeking extensions to awards, allowability, and authority to revise budgets, and authorizing human resource actions. The Post-Award Consultant will work with the CALS liaisons to assist the Principle Investigators (PIs), university administrative units, sponsors, and department/dean. The role of the Post-Award Consultant position is critical in interpreting both agency and university requirements and policies/practices to the departments and providing support to obtain newly available information on funding volume, the timing of reports, fiscal issues, and compliance with regulatory requirements. The position is empowered to manage its own group of funds and establish “events” in order to ensure timely follow-up and actions in an accurate and timely manner. The position will generate reports for the deans, department chairs, and PI’s to evaluate the activity and available funds. The position assists the faculty in determining funds available and timing of HR changes to ensure continued support for grants employees, both regular and student. The position is expected to make decisions and authorize actions such as human resource commitments, budget management, no-cost extensions, journal vouchers, and the need to request authorization from a sponsor. The Post-Award Consultant is expected to independently manage the sponsored programs portfolio for the areas to which they are assigned.

Minimum Experience/Education
Bachelor’s degree and one year of experience related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Other Required Qualifications
- Strong knowledge of business administration and accounting practices, including both budget and human resources management;
- Thorough knowledge of budgeting and forecasting;
- Experience managing contracts and grants subject to OMB Circular A-21 and/or Uniform Guidance;
- Ability to plan and direct the work of others; in conjunction with the unit manager, ability to initiate and install administrative programs and procedures and to evaluate their effectiveness; ability to make decisions independently and exercise judgment, discretion, and initiative in the development and interpretation of a wide range of administrative policies and procedures; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with departmental personnel, University and governmental officials, sponsors and the general public;
- Ability to work as a team as well as individually;
- Outstanding communication skills at all levels of comprehension are vital;
- Extensive experience and commitment to meeting the needs of our customers and providing outstanding customer service required;
- Must be highly organized and flexible in managing the workload;
- The ability to stay focused and self-manage is necessary.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working with grants in a large public institutions;
- Experience in interpreting and analyzing grant requirements and planning strategically for the use of funds;
- Experience-based knowledge is an asset.
