Essential Job Duties
The Business Officer works closely with the Vice Provost of OIED and helps to direct the operations of the unit’s administration. The Business Officer is independently responsible for executing business functions (e.g. JV/IDT, quarterly and year end budget adjustments, budget analysis and review, etc.), monitors and executes business activities and is responsible for ensuring the daily operational functions of OIED are met.
The Business Officer provides financial and budgetary oversight, which includes managing state appropriated budgets, discretionary, trust, gift accounts, contracts and grant funding. This position also manages auxiliary student fee-supported projects and includes budget forecasting, planning and reporting.
The Business Officer supervises the Business Services Coordinator (BSC) position. The BSC’s scope of work is generally focused on accounting and financial management of the student identity centers, and in addition, supports the financial and accounting work of the entire OIED unit.
This position provides leadership and administrative direction in the development of processes, procedures, and systems that contribute to successful business operations in OIED. The Business officer regularly monitors the quality and quantity of the business functions and service delivery efforts. The position establishes short term and long-range goals and objectives, the formulation of business policies and practices, and also the overall direction of business operations and service delivery. It also maintains successful working relationships with colleagues, customers, and administrators affected by the business operations.
The Business Officer supports the Vice Provost and the entire unit in annual giving/advancement projects and initiatives by helping with donor gratitude and management and appreciation; distribution of funds raised across all of OIED’s units; monthly and annual accounting of gift funds; and helping the VP’s leadership team strategize about advancement/fundraising opportunities and initiatives.
Minimum Education and Experience
Require post-baccalaureate credentials plus 1-2 years experience; a bachelor’s degree and 2-4 years experience may be substituted for the advanced degree on an exceptional basis.

- Ability to interact and communicate with a strong degree of judgment and discretion.
- Demonstrate thorough knowledge of the programs, operational structure, and administrator’s scope of responsibilities, priorities, and commitments.
- Demonstrated ability to coordinate, facilitate and implement solutions with internal and external constituents.
Preferred Qualifications
- Five years of University financial experience
- Five years of substantial experience managing business administration in an academic setting.
- Current knowledge and direct experience in Financials and HR systems (e.g. WolfPack Reporting and PeopleAdmin Systems in PeopleSoft platform or similar)
- Current knowledge and direct experience with state of NC and/or University system accounting; including student fees, grants, etc.
