About the Department
The 900+ positions of the Facilities Division service the students and staff of the University’s teaching, research/administrative space and 2,240 acres of infrastructure. The Facilities Division provides design and building services, maintenance, custodial, landscape, solid waste removal, utility, mail, and motor pool services 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The goal is to deliver cost effective services to the University, ensure completed projects and maintenance that conform to codes and regulations, while minimizing University liabilities and disruptions caused by the maintenance, repair, building, and equipment modifications to the University.
Essential Job Duties
Perform semi-skilled tasks in at least two complex and/or highly skilled trades involved in the maintenance and repair of a Centennial Campus “service zone”. Occasional Journey level work in trades, such as electrical, plumbing & HVAC. Facilities Maintenance Technicians at this level are generally semi-skilled helpers in a particular trade and area.
Other duties include:
- Develop a working knowledge of routine repairs in each trade, i.e., plumbing, electrical, HVAC, steam, fume hood.
- Provides technical assistance to others by troubleshooting simple facilities maintenance issues and determining their cause.
- Demonstrates proper procedures to isolate and lock-out systems for which you are responsible.
- Takes readings on boilers and chillers.
- Note and report any discrepancies found.
- Maintain accurate records on all equipment.
- Check chemical levels is assigned.

Minimum Experience/Education
High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Some positions may require special licenses or certification(s).
Optional Guidelines: Experience in the trade(s) areas related to the area of assignment may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
Other Required Qualifications
- Must be able to effectively communicate verbally with supervisors and the general public and understand verbal and written instructions and other communications regarding work assignments and other matters.
- Knowledge of mechanical trades/functions.
Preferred Qualifications
- One to two years experience in the trades.
Required License or Certification
- Valid Driver’s License.
- NC Driver’s License within 60 days of hire.
