Job Summary
As a staff member in Student Life, the Assistant Director of Fraternity & Sorority Life and IFC Advisor is responsible for working in conjunction with the Fraternity & Sorority Life team in setting the direction and advocating for the development of co-curricular programs and services that support student learning within fraternity student organizations. All efforts are in the service of creating learning environments that: celebrate diversity, foster student development, promote health and safety, and provide leadership development opportunities.
Primary areas of focus include:
- Student organization advising, consultation, and oversight (councils and fraternity/sorority chapters)
- Administrative responsibility for areas of specialization within Fraternity & Sorority Life, including sexual misconduct prevention, bystander intervention, supporting alcohol and other drug abuse prevention, and other well-being initiatives
- Program development and implementation
- Assist in assessment and evaluation in alignment with office and divisional assessment priorities
Responsibilities*
Student Organization Advising & Coaching (60%)
- Advise, consult with, and provide direction for the executive board members of the Interfraternity Council, Multicultural Greek Council, National Pan-Hellenic Council, and Panhellenic Association, with primary responsibility for the advising of the ten-member Interfraternity Council Executive Board. Coach, consult with and provide direction for the chapters and general membership of various councils.
- Manage crises related to student organization behavior, attend to the immediate needs of involved students and their families. Serve as a liaison to the inter/national headquarters.
- Consult and collaborate with the inter/national headquarters, local alumni advisors, house corporation representatives (when applicable), and University of Michigan campus partners to determine the course of action for organizational improvements.
- Assist councils in the creation and facilitation of activities designed to create a cohesive fraternal community and be able to constructively serve as a resource for their respective communities at large.
- Provide general education, direction, management, and leadership development opportunities to individual students and chapters to enhance student organizational effectiveness. Areas addressed include academic performance, physical and psychological health/wellness, risk management, career aspirations, interpersonal conflict, social identity and justice, and personal and leadership development.
- In partnership with other FSL team members, provide oversight and direction on Council financial concerns to ensure fiscal responsibility.
- Provide conflict resolution for individual students, between student organizations, and work with Fraternity & Sorority Life office leadership to resolve conflict involving community entities such as law enforcement, city of Ann Arbor officials, and/or neighbors.
- Demonstrate knowledge, skills and multicultural competency, and expertise in the prevention of high-risk use of alcohol and other drugs.
- Provide specialized leadership in and focus on harm reduction and bystander intervention.
- Work in partnership with other office staff to advise and/or oversee office related committees, honor societies, and other special groups and projects such as Order of Omega, Gamma Sigma Alpha, Greek Activities Review Panel (GARP), Social Responsibility Committee (SRC), Investigation and Support Team (IST). Facilitate the training of these groups’ leaders and provide educational programming to their members.
- Work in partnership with the Assistant Director of Organizational Conduct and Community Standards and Leadership Development Manager to provide intervention support to student organizations and its members regarding community standards.
Program Development and Management (20%)
- Coordinate fraternity & sorority life experience marketing strategy to students and families.
- Design departmental programs for the fraternal community.
- Initiate and facilitate curriculum for leadership education and other proactive educational and risk management programming for the fraternity and sorority community.
- Initiate partnerships with faculty, staff, students, and student organizations consistent with unit goals and priorities in order to identify and recruit support for program development and implementation.
- Establish program evaluation strategies, in partnership with Associate Director of Fraternity & Sorority Life for new initiatives.
Administrative (15%)
- Provide resources, information, and education to students, their families, faculty, staff, and the greater community regarding student involvement in fraternal organizations.
- Work in partnership with the Center for Campus Involvement to ensure chapters participate and have completed Voluntary Student Organization registration, which is the process that keeps student organization’s details up to date and recognized by the Center for Campus Involvement (CCI) and Student Organization Account Service (SOAS).
- Lead and participate in University-wide committees including establishing liaison relationships with other departments, participating in periodic meetings with Division of Student Life offices across campus.
- Assist in the preparation and tracking of departmental operating budget and expenditures through providing documentation of evidence supporting requests for additional expenditures.
- Participate in strategic planning efforts when appropriate.
- Assist the Associate Director of Fraternity & Sorority Life in the on-going assessment and evaluation priorities of the office.
Supervision (5%)
- Serve as part of the team that hires, supervises, trains, and evaluates graduate interns.
- Supervise graduate intern, as funding is available, in accordance with students’ academic program expectations and professional standards.
- Maintain communication with graduate interns’ academic programs as needed.
Required Qualifications*
- Education: Master’s degree in higher education administration, public policy, public health, student affairs administration, counselor or a related field
- Minimum two years’ experience working in student affairs administration or working for fraternity/sorority inter/national headquarters
Desired Qualifications*
- Professional Certification: membership in a fraternity/sorority organization
- Knowledge of and experience with the application of student and leadership development theories within Greek-letter organizations; strong administrative, organizational, and interpersonal skills
Additional Information
Specialized Knowledge: Ability to demonstrate knowledge in the following areas: promotion of physical and psychological health/wellness, sexual misconduct prevention and response, prevention of high-risk use of alcohol and other drugs, diversity and inclusion, leadership development and hazing prevention within fraternal organizations
Position Criteria:
- Ability to work independently and multitask.
- Strong verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills.
- Strong administrative, organizational, and interpersonal skills; knowledge of and experience implementing best practices in risk management within fraternal organizations.
Financial/Budgetary Responsibility
Provide oversight to the revenue and expenses of the Interfraternity Council budget, approximately $90,000 annually.
As needed, track spending in accordance with departmental expectations.
Working conditions
Position requires working on-site and the ability to work a flexible schedule, including frequent evenings and weekends.
Physical requirements
The person in this position regularly travels to various locations on campus and certain off-campus properties. The person in this position routinely presents at meetings and events and may need to move items weighing up to twenty-five (25) pounds. The person in this position routinely moves through various facilities to attend meetings/events and access files or information. Travel may be required.
Direct reports
Will supervise up one Student Services Assistant I (Graduate Intern) if funding permits.
This role may have reporting obligations under Title IX and Clery.
