Essential Job Duties
The Department of Biological Sciences in the College of Sciences at North Carolina State University seeks outstanding candidates for a tenure-track faculty position in Microbiology at the preferred rank of Assistant Professor, although exceptional candidates for Associate Professor will be considered.
The ideal candidate will have research expertise with pathogens of importance to global health challenges, viruses in particular, in areas of detection, diagnosis, prevention and the study of host-interactions including the microbiome and immunology to understand pathogenic potential and mechanisms.
We seek interdisciplinary candidates who will integrate across departmental and university-wide research initiatives and training opportunities such as:
- The Data Science Academy (DSA), which aims to accelerate data-intensive discovery, teaching and service.
- The Genetics and Genomics Academy (GGA), which enhances collaborations across the life sciences to understand genetic and genomic underpinnings of life on earth
- The Comparative Medicine institute (CMI), which develops, fosters, and assists interdisciplinary teams focused on translating basic research and scientific discovery into clinical/societal applications to improve the health of animals and humans.
- Graduate programs in Microbiology, Genetics, Toxicology, Bioinformatics, Comparative Biomedical Sciences, among others
The successful candidate will be expected to develop and maintain an extramurally funded, nationally recognized, independent research program and to support the academic mission of the department by including undergraduate and graduate training. The candidate will also be expected to develop and teach innovative and inclusive undergraduate courses in coordination with the curricular needs of the department and its Microbiology major and Global Health minor.
Support will include a competitive start-up package, laboratory space, and an interactive research environment, and professional development and faculty mentoring resources.

Minimum Education and Experience
Applicants should have a relevant doctoral degree, an equivalent degree, or equivalent professional experience.
Other Required Qualifications
The successful candidates are expected to participate in collaborative, multi-investigator research and training initiatives that include NC State biologists, toxicologists, geneticists, bioinformaticists, statisticians, chemists and veterinarians.
Preferred Qualifications
Research interests compatible with those in the department. Postdoctoral experience in a relevant field.
