Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:
We have an opening for a postdoc in Prof Sid Pathak’s research group in the Materials Science and Engineering department at the Iowa State University (https://www.mse.iastate.edu/sidpathak/). The appointment will be initially for one year, extensible by another one or two years depending on satisfactory performance.
We are seeking highly motivated individuals with a strong background in thin film deposition, electron microscopy, materials characterization and nano-mechanical testing. Current research focus of our group is on (i) mechanistic design of multi-layered composites, for both biological, structural and functional applications, and (ii) quantitative understanding of their local mechanical structural changes under extremes of temperature, strain rate and damage (irradiation).
These positions are funded from National Science Foundation (NSF), Department of Energy (DOE) and Army Research Office (ARO) grants. The applicant will work closely with the Center for Integrated Nanotechnology (CINT) at Sandia National Laboratory (SNL) and Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) for their research. In addition to the post-doc’s salary, an NSF fellowship will provide for the travel costs for the postdoc to CINT and other locations. Additionally the candidate will have access to Ames Laboratory, a US Department of Energy (DOE) facility that is on the campus of Iowa State University, and the world class user facilities at Ames Laboratory's Materials Processing Center (MPC) and state-of-the-art characterization Sensitive Instrument Facility (SIF), and its impressive set of SEM and TEM instruments.

- A PhD in materials, mechanical engineering, or other related fields
- Hands-on expertise in electron microscopy, thin film deposition, and/or nano-mechanical testing
- Demonstrated strong verbal and written communication skills
- Demonstrated ability to work as a team and independently
