Job Description:
Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:
Responsibilities include developing and improving innovative veterinary diagnostic laboratory information management and bioinformatics software applications in support of advancing the field and practice of veterinary diagnostic and production animal medicine. The specific areas of focus center on application development and bioinformatics related research and services that are of high relevance to the Iowa State University Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory’s (ISU VDL) stakeholders in food animal agriculture. The incumbent will play a principally important role in creating tools that improve the efficiencies of the ISU VDL, enhancing the value of diagnostic information being generated, and serve to provide new bioinformatics related insights and services that further inform VDL clientele decision making. The new role will work closely collaborators inside and outside of Iowa State University on a breadth of research endeavors that collectively play a role in improving animal health, public health, and the safety and security of the food supply chain.
Required Minimum Qualifications:
PhD in computational science, bioinformatics, or closely related field.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated competence in developing built for purpose software applications for veterinary diagnostic laboratory use cases.
- Experience in conducting advanced bioinformatics analyses and interpretation of viral pathogens of significance to food animals (i.e., swine, poultry, or beef).
- Working knowledge and experience in the operations of a veterinary diagnostic laboratory.
- Record of publication and scientific meeting presentations (oral and poster) involving applied uses cases of bioinformatics in veterinary diagnostic medicine.
