About the Department
The Department of Biological Sciences, within the College of Sciences at NC State University, is dedicated to research and teaching in a broad range of aspects of the biological sciences. The Department has strong undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral programs and substantial extramural support to develop and maintain integrative research programs. Additionally, the Department partners with other life sciences units across the University to enhance its mission to conduct interdisciplinary research and training programs.
Essential Job Duties
The Research Associate will have the following responsibilities:
- Conducting independent and team research aimed at the identification and characterization of genes/signaling pathways that are determinants of cancer, particularity as it relates to gene-environment interactions and cell death.
- Using genomic/genetic/molecular/cellular-based systems and genetically engineered mouse models to define mechanisms through which environmental stressors induce skin cancer
- Conducting research on how cells respond to DNA damage and tumor stress to make decisions to live or die. These decisions and the ability to influence these programmed cell death decisions have important implications for tumor development and tumor regression.
- Study the role of basic leucine zipper transcription factors, CCAAT/enhance binding proteins (C/EBPs) in this process

Other Responsibilities
The Research Associate is expected to help with the writing of manuscripts and grants and the preparation of figures.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Education and Experience
Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree, or relevant Bachelor’s degree plus 3 or more years of independent research experience.
Other Required Qualifications
- Prior experience in molecular biology
- Ability to assist with the preparation of figures for manuscripts and grants.
- Ability to participate in weekly lab meetings.
- The ability to learn new techniques, work independently, multitask, attention to detail and careful/accurate keeping.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous knowledge/experience with molecular biology techniques including immunoblotting, DNA/RNA extraction, PCR, cell culture, and working with mice.
