Position Overview: This position is a member of the Office of the Chief Nurse Executive with the primary objective to enable the strategic initiatives of the Chief Nurse Executive, as well as manage change in the complex, dynamic environment of the health system. This pivotal liaison role reports directly to the CNE and is responsible for the administrative, financial, and operational activities related to the strategic initiatives of the CNE ensuring effective use of time and resources as well as the management of strategic initiatives, programs, and projects. This individual will work collaboratively with leaders from UH/CVC, C&W and UMMG to build and maintain positive relationships and to ensure strategic initiatives and operations are connected and integrated. This individual must have the skill set and experience to enable them to operate with wide discretion and independent judgment in highly complex and sensitive situations.
CNE Strategic Initiatives: The Strategic Advisor has accountability for designing, implementing, and evaluating systems impacted by strategic initiatives; assist with the development and implementation of short- and long-term strategies. This individual will contribute to strategic initiatives of the CNE’s work and leadership of the organization, with the goal of enhancing the effectiveness of the CNE’s initiatives, standardizing tools, templates, mechanisms, and methodologies that will ultimately deliver more value. He/she will manage these strategic initiatives, programs, and projects. This will include monitoring progress and performance against the project plan, identifying and resolving operational problems, and minimizing delays. This individual will also evaluate and propose changes that significantly impact the scope, budget, or timeline of a project; select and manage ongoing relationships with external contractors ensuring the organization receives satisfactory standards of service.
Strategic Initiative Management: The Strategic Advisor will lead, direct, evaluate, and develop project managers/support staff to ensure that projects are completed on time, within budget, and according to project specifications. Management duties for direct reports, if assigned, may include interviewing, selecting, training, and evaluating employees; setting and adjusting their rates of pay and hours of work; planning and directing their work; assessing their productivity and efficiency for the purpose of recommending promotions or other changes in their status; ensuring engagement, and if needed, taking corrective action. Management responsibilities include the authority to hire, terminate, or promote assigned employees.
Organizational Alignment Activities: This position will research, advise, and execute organizational alignment activities necessary for increasing the effectiveness of faculty and staff thereby accomplishing more successful organizational change and performance overall. These responsibilities include supporting the CNE’s strategic initiatives by creating situational awareness of sensitive/timely information, helping to prioritize daily issues, formulating internal and external communications, finding creative ways to instill positive culture and lead change, creating and maintaining mechanisms for listening to the voices of all constituencies, building the infrastructure for coalitions where necessary, directing various dashboards/analyses, and coordinating all aspects of strategic planning for initiatives, leadership meetings, forums and schedules.
Under FLSA, incumbents in this position meet the criteria for exempt status.
1. High-level administrative coordination and facilitation of the strategic system initiatives of the CNE.
2. Maintains relationships and collaborates closely with other senior advisors/leads in the institution to advance the CNE’s initiatives.
3. Provide executive leadership /consultation/ advisement to the CNE regarding organizational alignment strategies, communication and change management strategies and integration of systems management structure through to execution.
4. Prepares and/or analyzes proposals on complex topics, making recommendations, action plans and implementing as appropriate.
5. Supports the CNE in the strategic initiative planning process including retreats, then develops and implements the resulting short- and long-term strategies, policies, procedures, practices, and programs.
6. Manages programs and/or projects to enhance CNE strategic initiatives. Plans, implements, and evaluates specific projects designed to enhance system effectiveness. Participates in the design, implementation, and evaluation of defined programs to promote attainment of system goals.
7. Orchestrates professional staff support on all aspects of strategic initiative meetings and forums and staff venues requiring independent judgment and planning. Directs strategic initiative operating calendars, scheduled and ad-hoc agenda topics based-on the needs of the initiative and ensures sufficient professional staffing including preparing meeting format, communicating to members, and preparing materials and presentations in service of CNE priorities. Works with leadership to create follow-up actions and documentation of all committee issues and concerns. Completes follow up of significantly complex issues independently as appropriate.
8. Synthesizes large quantities of data and information to create succinct communications to influence decision-making and inform broad audiences.
9. Works with CNE and others to identify and recommend fiscal, material, and human resource requirements for specific project/programs.
10. Develops and maintains a strong knowledge of the CNE’s strategic priority areas and hospital linkages to enable independent handling of appropriate matters.
11. Researches and investigates CNE-level system issues and problems. Works with leadership and other departments in an effort to resolve issues and problems. Initiates follow-up to all pertinent parties.
12. Represents the CNE on committees, internal and external to the institution, including special task forces, project teams as designated; assumes responsibility for specific projects and/or activities as designated.
13. Manages or advises project managers ensuring highly competent performance of duties including planning, task management, status reporting, outcome delivery, etc.
14. Serves as liaison between the CNE’s Office and committees, programs, and projects as assigned.
15. Coordinates, reviews, and summarizes relevant literature sources and briefing requests as assigned.
16. Independently develops written communications, e.g., reports, correspondence, presentations, business communications, and independently drafts replies for the CNE’s consideration.
17. Oversees the final preparations to ensure CNE meetings are complete and of a high standard.
18. All other duties as assigned.
