Summary
Please note, this is a University of Michigan internal search limited to faculty members holding the rank of tenured Professor in the Ann Arbor, Dearborn and Flint campus. Associate Professors who are up for promotion to full Professor in the current cycle (AY 2021-22) will be considered. The candidate will serve 50% in the capacity of Executive Director and 50% as a Professor in his/her own department, or as negotiated and carries a two year minimum commitment. The position of Executive Director for the Office of Research and Economic Development (ORED) is the senior research officer of the university. Reporting directly to the Chancellor, the Executive Director will be responsible for the following:
- Developing and executing a strategic research agenda for UM-Flint that is interdisciplinary and inclusive of all major areas of the scholarship
- Advance and promote the research mission of UM-Flint by supporting faculty and students with services and resources to enhance creative endeavors
- Serving as the chief research officer for the university and build relations with industry, federal and state relations toward that end
- Significantly enhance institutional activities in externally funded research, community economic development, and corporate and foundation relations for the benefit of students and faculty at UM-Flint
- Assist faculty in activities that lead to collaborative proposals within UM-Flint and with external partners including UM-Dearborn, UM-Ann Arbor and other institution
- Support linkages between ORED activities and UM-Flint educational programs
- Develop infrastructure, practices and policy to promote innovation, entrepreneurship, applied research, and tech-transfer culture at UM-Flint
- Represent UM-Flint in research administration meetings in Ann Arbor (OVPR)
- Represent UM-Flint in research administration meetings in MASU (the organization for 15 public universities in Michigan)
- Provide oversight for the offices of Research and Economic Development and supervise the directors of both Research and Economic Development units
- Guide staff and collaborative with marketing and communications in the University to produce print, presentations, video, visual and digital media to highlight faculty research
- Communicate to the general public, to the state and region the value proposition of UM-Flint in general, and more specifically to greater Flint
- Developing and regularly reporting on a set of metrics for measuring the effectiveness of ORED
- Execute other research and economic development assignments from the Chancellor as and when directed
