Summary
The University of Michigan, School of Nursing (UMSN), Grants and Research Office is looking for a Research Administrator Senior who has at least 3 or more years related accounting experience with pre- and post-award research administration and sponsored research accounting. You will: provide post-award accounting and administrative/financial oversight for assigned complex grants and contracts; provide U-M-level and UMSN-level procedure interpretation to Principal Investigator (PI) and research staff; monitor subcontract invoices for PI approval and monitors invoices; and provide timely post-award account reconciliation/budget management for federal, state, foundation and internally funded grants. You will report to the Research Administration Manager.
Responsibilities*
Pre-Award
- Review all proposals for GRO Manager approval. Be the lead for pre-award submissions ensuring proposals submitted by deadlines. Be team lead and back up to GRO Manager.
- Independently responsible for pre-award activities/submissions of grant and contract proposals for a subset of faculty; these will include sponsors such as NIH, NSF, industry, and foundation sponsors. Develop budgets, write budget narratives, and assemble required documents for submissions.
- Lead, review and coordinate the submission/completion of all Just in Time requests, and other support documents.
- Back up to pre-award team for submissions of complex multi-center grants, training grants and complex contracts and complex budget development.
Post-Award
- As the senior financial administrator for the UMSN Grants and Research office (GRO) for sponsored and non-sponsored research projects/grants, you will set-up, monitor, and forecast financials for an active set of project grants and contracts, which includes managing multiple budget changes, carry forward requests, and re-budgeting awarded funds for new priorities.
- Prepare RPPRs and other project reports due to sponsor.
- Approve all close out financial status reports (FSRs) for sponsored projects for the GRO team.
- Track faculty and staff effort on multiple project portfolios to minimize retroactive appointment changes. Initiate and submit Department Budget Earnings changes and changes in effort and gaps in funding for complex projects within UMSN.
- Provide complex projections.
- Be the lead for post-award team to provide best practices on the financial management of sponsored and non-sponsored research projects.
- Approve and initiate journal entries, complying with 120-day federal guidelines.
- Be a resource within our department and UMSN on the technical aspects of financial management and the research administration role.
- Serve on University-wide committees as applicable to represent our interests.

Required Qualifications*
- Requires a minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible experience in pre and post award research administration as well as a bachelor’s degree; or minimum of 5 years equivalent education and work experience.
- Pre-award proposal submission experience.
- Experience with budgeting, submitting and managing complex projects and grants.
- You should have excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to write clearly and concisely for various mediums, high attention to detail, strong interpersonal skills, and organizational skills.
- Excellent computer skills, including demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office products (Word, Outlook, Advanced Excel, Access, and PowerPoint).
- Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines, set priorities and multi task.
- Collaborate effectively with co-workers and able to work in a team environment, sharing ideas and best practices learned.
- Ability to work independently and exercise good judgement, along with attention to detail and dependability.
Desired Qualifications*
- Demonstrated financial management or accounting skills
- Experience with electronic research administration at NIH and U-M, particularly eRPM systems such as PAF, AWD, MPathways, Business Objects.
- Experience tracking effort. University Year appointment experience a plus.
- Research Administration certification from an accredited organization desired.
- NIH and HRSA grant experience preferred.
Additional Information
Shift/Hours/Days: 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday; may include some occasional weekend and/or evening hours.
Salary Range: Due to the necessary requirements, the salary range for this position is $68,000 - $72,000. Salary is commensurate with the qualifications and experience of the selected candidate. We encourage all interested parties meeting requirements to apply.
