Executive Director
Founded in 1902 by Arts and Crafts movement idealists, Ralph and Jane Whitehead, the Woodstock Byrdcliffe Guild is one of the oldest continuously operating arts colony in America. Today, Byrdcliffe serves as an increasingly vibrant cultural center supporting artists and diverse forms of artistic expression, attracting and serving local, regional, national, and international artists and audiences. Byrdcliffe owns and manages a 250-acre mountainside campus and a center for the arts located in the village of Woodstock, New York. Byrdcliffe’s programming includes an artists-in-residence for 80 artists, exhibitions, workshops and classes and performances.
Position:
The Woodstock Byrdcliffe Guild seeks a dynamic and experienced leader to serve as Executive Director whose role will be to advance the mission and strategic plan of the organization. This position initially is part-time (3 or 4 days a week/ 20 hours), with planned growth into a full-time position. The Executive Director will work closely with and report to the Board of Trustees.
The Executive Director directs and administers all programs, operations and policies with the participation and collaboration from a professional staff of six and other non-staff contractors.

Byrdcliffe’s Executive Director should have strong planning, organizational, analytical, financial management, and written, oral and interpersonal communication skills. A proven capacity to motivate and develop the staff, Board, volunteers, members and donors in ways that build a healthy community for the organization is essential. The Executive Director’s management style should be collaborative, diverse, inclusive and innovative while also achieving results. The Director should have an entrepreneurial spirit embracing vision, motivation, and sound execution. An ability to think like a for-profit business person, in a non-profit context, is key.
Qualifications and Experience:
The individual should have substantial experience in a senior management positon, preferably in a non-profit organization. A successful candidate should have experience with the arts, historic preservation, or related areas. Applicants should have a proven record as a successful manager, fundraiser, and advocate for an organization. Strong public speaking skills a must for Byrdcliffe and non-Byrdcliffe sponsored events. A college degree is required and a graduate degree in management or the arts is preferred.
