JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
The Materials Research Institute at Penn State seeks outstanding applicants for a Postdoctoral Scholar position focused on molecular beam epitaxy (MBE ) growth and characterization of transition metal dichalcogenides and related two-dimensional (2D) materials.
The postdoctoral position is part of the National Science Foundation funded 2D Crystal Consortium (2DCC) Materials Innovation Platform national facility at Penn State. The 2DCC is focused on the development of 2D layered chalcogenide films and bulk crystals for applications in next-generation devices. The goal of the platform is to advance the synthesis science of 2D layered chalcogenides and provide individuals at universities, federal laboratories and industry with the equipment infrastructure and human capital to conceive, research, and develop the next generation of materials systems to maintain the United States’ pre-eminence in electronic material, device, and component technology.
Position responsibilities:
The Postdoctoral Scholar will be responsible for performing world-leading 2D materials synthesis research aligned to the goals of the 2DCC, including both in-house research and collaboration with external users of the 2DCC facility. Rich opportunities will be available for innovative equipment and process development, advanced materials characterization and deep collaborations with theoretical/computational efforts focused on materials growth. The Postdoctoral Scholar will be expected to present results at technical conferences and prepare manuscripts for submission. The Postdoctoral Scholar will also assist with operations in the MBE facility, including equipment upkeep, data management, communications with users, preparation of reports for research sponsors, and scientific outreach to the broader community.
Qualifications:
Candidates for this position must have a Ph.D. in Physics, Materials Science and Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Chemistry or a closely related field, a strong record of related research and experience maintaining and operating thin film deposition equipment. Specific experience with MBE growth of compound semiconductors, oxides, nitrides and/or chalcogenide thin films is a plus. This position requires excellent organizational, time management and communication skills and the ability to work in an interdisciplinary team environment in support of the goals of in-house research and external users of the 2DCC.
To be considered for this position, applicants should include a curriculum vitae, a cover letter with a summary of relevant skills and experience and contact information for three professional references (name, position title, mailing address, telephone number and e-mail address).
