Postdoctoral Research Fellow – Systems Engineering

The George Mason University Center of Excellence in C4I and Cyber (C4I and Cyber Center), within the Volgenau School of Engineering, invites applications for the Postdoctoral Research Fellow position. This position will conduct research that investigates the applicability of systems engineering, operations research, and cyber security techniques to the design of mission-critical architectures for Cyber-Physical Systems. Research interests should involve, but are not limited to, the Model-based Systems Engineering (MBSE), applied formal methods, cyber security, systems assurance, performing test, evaluation, verification and validation for algorithms, data sets, and methodologies in large-scale complex system and socio-technical system environments. Responsibilities:
The candidate will be part of a multidisciplinary team developing novel techniques for cyber security, command and control, and complex systems development, analysis, and evaluation. Specific responsibilities of this role include, but are not limited to:

• Research and development of architectures for mission-critical cyber-physical systems;
• Research integration of advanced technologies, such as artificial intelligence, 5G etc., with human-centered design in complex and socio-technical systems;
• Development and application of advanced methods for model-based systems engineering and simulation-based design, test, and evaluation of complex systems; and
• Design experiments, conduct research, and prepare manuscripts for publication in leading journals and peer-reviewed academic conferences.
  

Required Qualifications:

• Applicants for the Postdoctoral Research Fellow position must have received a Ph.D. in Information Technology, Systems Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Computer Science or a closely related field by the start date of the position;
• Candidates must possess, have experience in, and be able to demonstrate strong skills in systems engineering concepts such as system architecture development, analysis, and/or evaluation; and
• Candidates must possess the ability to work collaboratively as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
  

Preferred Qualifications:

• Have publications in academic, peer-reviewed venues in the areas of complex systems, model-based systems engineering, mission-critical systems, and/or closely related fields;
• Have experience in developing software using DevOps tools such as JIRA and Confluence;
• Have experience in developing simulations of complex systems and generating large-data sets for analysis and evaluation;
• Have experience in developing advanced algorithms for decision support systems and/or human-machine teaming; and
• Have expertise in one or more of the following areas:
  • Ontologies and/or probabilistic ontologies (PR-OWL);
  • AADL, MATLAB;
  • SysML, RDF/OWL, SPARQL, or similar;
  • Object-oriented programming;
  • Agent-based modeling/Discrete-event Simulations; and
  • Machine Learning Algorithms.
