Position Description

Reporting to the College President and serving on the President's Cabinet, the Provost and Vice President serves as the Chief Learning Officer. The Provost provides strategic leadership to the Division of Learning, which includes the Schools of Continuing Education and Workforce Development, Liberal Arts, Professional and Technical Studies, and Science and Health as well as all academic operational and support areas, to ensure that they reflect the mission of the college. The Provost serves as an advocate for all educational programs, providing leadership to faculty, staff, and administrators to ensure consistent high-quality standards in curricula and programs that meet the needs of students and the region. The Provost oversees the academic integrity of the college and provides leadership in long-range planning, budgeting, curriculum, program development, and faculty support. The Provost ensures compliance with various accrediting bodies as well as with Maryland and federal regulations.
The Provost and Vice President for Learning is complex position and has a broad range of duties:
Provides Leadership for the Division of Learning- 70%
Participates in College-wide activities- 25%
Represents the College in the Community- 5%
2. Education/Knowledge Required: Specify required degrees, experience, special skills and abilities necessary for satisfactory performance.
3. Supervision: List all position titles reporting directly to this position, full-time or part-time. Include student assistants, temporary, permanent, and part-time faculty supervised in a typical semester or year.

Excellent, complex oral and written communication skills required to varied audiences.
7. Role Complexity:
The position requires complex long- and short-term planning to ensure the viability of the college.
Every day brings different challenges—there is little routine. The incumbent must be able to multi-
task regularly. As the primary educational leader, the Provost and Vice President must be aware of and respond to internal and external forces. There is considerable environmental uncertainty which makes decision-making difficult.
8. Creativity & Innovation:
The Provost and Vice President must motivate and encourage faculty to innovate and grow. They set the tone and determine the direction of the academic division and developed policies and procedures that guide the division. Creativity is an important skill-set of this position and is an expectation by the President.
9. Impact:
This position impacts the entire academic division of the college. They oversee over 400
instructors and an academic program composed of hundreds of courses and scores of
academic programs. Although the Provost and Vice President does not directly work with students, their activities have a major impact.
10. Fiscal Responsibility: Describe the fiscal responsibility. Include total dollars that the position directly controls.
The Provost and Vice President administers a budget in excess of $30 million dollars.
11. Physical Working Environment: Describe the physical working environment and list any hazardous and toxic substances used in the performance of duties.
Working beyond a normal 9-5 schedule is routine and includes early morning meetings, evening
meetings and occasional weekend meetings. Travel between CSM’s campuses and to other colleges is expected.
