The Mission

The mission of the Boston Public Health Commission (BPHC) to work in partnership with communities to protect and promote the health and well-being of all Boston residents, especially those impacted by racism and systemic inequities. The Role

The Office of Human Resources is committed to supporting over 1300 employees that work and live in the communities that we serve. The Associate Director will report to the Chief People Officer and assist with the strategic planning and day-to-day operations of the Office of Human Resources. The best candidate for the role will:

  • Take a pivotal role in nurturing positive employee relations, steering performance improvements, and efficiently managing and resolving workplace conflicts.
  • Collaborate with managers to address corrective actions, offering support in creating and reviewing supporting documentation, disciplinary notices, and performance improvement plans.
  • Exemplify leadership in driving change, championing transformation, and actively supporting departmental and organizational change efforts.
  • Be a visionary leader who proactively takes the initiative to craft policies and procedures that are tailor-made to drive the Commission's success and well-being.
  • Collaborate seamlessly throughout the organization, contributing to initiatives aimed at enhancing the overall employee experience.
  • Operate in a confidential role alongside the Office of Labor and Employment, exercising independent judgment and discretion to make critical decisions. This may involve representing management in the grievance and arbitration process, including tasks such as hearing and resolving grievances and participating in grievance hearings.
  • Collaborate with unionized employees in coordination with labor and employment attorneys to provide assistance and support in resolving employee-related matters.
  • Innovatively mend and enhance inefficient processes.
  • Working to help BPHC advance as an antiracist organization by meeting or exceeding the standards set by the BPHC Anti-Racism Policy.
  • Promote health equity, inclusion and diversity within the BPHC, department and community.
  • Knowledge of or willingness to learn about the role of public health in addressing racism, the social determinants of health, and inequities in health outcomes as well as strategies to advance racial justice and health equity.

Minimum Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS

  • 5-7 years of significant Human Resources Generalist, Human Resources Business Partner and/or Employee Relations experience.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong organization skills.
  • Strong presentation skills.
  • Worked in a union environment, preferred.
  • SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, PHR, CCP, preferred.
