The Department of English at the University of Iceland invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor/Lecturer in Restoration and Eighteenth-Century Literature.

The successful applicant will contribute to a survey of British literature (1603-1789) as well as to undergraduate and postgraduate elective courses on Restoration and eighteenth-century literature, the rise of the novel, literature of the Enlightenment, and also potentially classes on transatlantic, global Anglophone, Irish, and/or North American literature. The successful applicant will also supervise B.A. essays and M.A. and Ph.D. theses in English Literature. Teaching is in English and therefore near-native proficiency in English is required. Most compulsory courses are taught by distance as well as on-site, so the successful applicant must be willing and able to participate in distance teaching. The teaching load will typically fall in the range of 2-2, but this can vary based on enrollment numbers, administrative duties, and research productivity.

Application process
The position carries full administrative responsibilities and therefore proficiency in Icelandic will be an advantage, though not a prerequisite; a willingness to achieve basic competence in Icelandic in the first two years is expected.
The evaluation committee will consider how the applicant’s experience fits the needs of the Department, both in terms of research and teaching. The initial appointment will be from 1 July 2021, for five years with the possibility of a full-time appointment in accordance with par. 3 of Art. 31. of the rules of the University of Iceland no. 569/2009.
All handling of applications, assessment of applicant suitability and appointment to the position will be conducted in accordance with the Act on public higher education institutions no. 85/2008 and the rules of the University of Iceland no. 569/2009.
All applications will be acknowledged and applicants will be informed of the appointment when the hiring process is completed. Applications may be valid for six months after the application deadline.
The salary for the position of Assistant Professor will be in accordance with the current collective wage and salary agreement between the Union of University Teachers and the Minister of Finance.
