PROMOTIONAL AND OPEN COMPETITIVE
TUTORING COORDINATOR - MODERN LANGUAGES

Santa Monica Community College District is seeking a Tutoring Coordinator to oversee the tutoring center for our modern languages and cultures courses. Currently, tutoring services are being provided in a virtual environment. This individual will function as a lead over student tutors in the center, and will connect students with appropriate tutors and audio/visual language programs, track and monitor student participation, and coordinate all related services.
The Santa Monica College Department of Modern Languages and Cultures promotes a community of respect and understanding of different ethnic groups and their cultures through the study of language, literature, and culture. Students are trained to understand, speak, read, and write in the target language, enabling them to interact with and contribute to the global community by giving them a global perspective ”including the appreciation of other cultural heritages” which promotes community, national, and international cooperation. Programs of study covered by the tutoring center include linguistics and 14 different modern languages.
This position is scheduled to work Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., 40 hours per week, 11 months per year. This position will report to Wendi DeMorst, Interim Associate Dean of Student Instructional Support.

Salary Placement
New Employees: Generally, new employees start at the first step on the salary schedule. A new permanent classified employee may request a higher salary placement (not to exceed the third step) based on recruitment issues and/or additional training and experience which greatly exceeds the minimum requirements.
Current Employees: Upon promotion, the new salary for a current, permanent employee is based on Merit Rule 12.2.8. In accordance with this rule, employees are entitled to at least a one-step (5%) salary increase, and may be eligible for advanced step placement in accordance with established criteria.
**Important Note:** In response to an unanticipated budget shortfall resulting from COVID-19, temporary furloughs have been implemented at Santa Monica College. The working hours of this position will be reduced by one (1) working day per month through June 2021 (unless terminated earlier or extended). Please note that the monthly and annual salaries listed on this job bulletin do not reflect these furlough days.
**The salary range shown above does not include longevity increments. Longevity increments of 5% are granted at the completion of 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 and 35 years of service.
Selection Process
The selection process will tentatively consist of a Qualifications Appraisal Interview (weighted 100%), possibly preceded by a Training and Experience Evaluation (Pass/Fail). The Training and Experience Evaluation will consist of a structured evaluation of experience and training, based on your online application and responses to the supplemental questions included in your online application. This process is intended to assess your qualifications above and beyond the minimum requirements for the job. Only the top qualified applicants whose backgrounds best match the requirements of this position will be invited to move forward to the Qualifications Appraisal Interview.
Candidates must be successful on all test parts to be placed on the eligibility list. Two separate eligibility lists will be created from this recruitment: one for promotional candidates and one for external candidates. The promotional list will be used first, and must be exhausted before we can hire external candidates to fill vacant positions.

- Examples of Duties
Assesses student tutoring needs and designs individual improvement programs to help the student improve academic skills.
Provides tutoring services to students by assisting students in improving study skills, in understanding course content, and in completing assignments.
Assists students in utilizing equipment and materials available in the Modern Language tutoring centers at various campus locations.
Develops and implements procedures and activities for the tutoring program for all Modern Language centers or other tutoring areas.
Administers assessment tests designed to assess student skills and improvement; facilitates special test proctoring.
Checks and reviews students' lab work, answers questions regarding course work, and explains lab assignments; acts as a liaison to the lab, works collaboratively with other academic support programs.
Recruits, hires, trains and oversees the work of student tutors to provide effective assistance to students in the lab.
Coordinates work schedules for student tutors at all Modern Language centers by matching tutors' abilities with the needs of the students.
Prepares and submits payroll for student tutors.
Consults with faculty and other campus staff to ensure the program is meeting the needs of students and identifies and develops instructional resources to support the tutoring program.
Participates in the development and assessment of program effectiveness.
Conducts orientations to classes and instructors on tutoring and other services offered by the program.
Creates forms and flyers to publicize the tutoring program.
Creates, updates, and maintains databases to track student use of services.
Creates and maintains page(s) on the college website that promotes the program and its services.
Develops and provides workshops to students to support instructional programs
Monitors the tutoring budget as assigned; provides input concerning related expenditures; assists in assuring expenditures do not exceed established limitations.
Maintains a variety of student records and files, and prepares required reports.
Performs other related duties as requested or assigned.

- Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience Requirement:
Possession of an Associate of Arts degree that includes a minimum of 24 semester units in Foreign Languages, preferably in Spanish and one other language taught at Santa Monica College. A Bachelor's Degree is desirable.
Experience Requirement:
Three (3) years of experience tutoring students. Experience organizing, coordinating, or scheduling the work of others is also required. Experience leading student workers and/or experience working in a community college or university setting providing academic support services to students is desirable.
Education/Experience Equivalency:
A Bachelor's Degree in Spanish or a closely related degree may substitute for two of the three years of experience.
