Overview:
The Electric Drive Research (EDR) Group at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking applicants for a postdoctoral position to conduct research on automated design and multi objective optimization of wide bandgap power electronics systems. The successful candidate will be capable of developing tools for automated design and optimization of power electronics, including simulation of power modules and power electronics systems for electric drives and wireless charging systems. The candidate will also assist in fabrication and evaluation of power electronics systems as well as contributing to the development of innovative power electronics designs for inverters and converters for various applications.
Major Duties / Responsibilities
- Conduct R&D projects and help the expansion of R&D to take advantage of our multidisciplinary capabilities, multimodal strengths, and unique tools and capabilities.
- Be familiar with the state of the art in power electronics technology, packaging of wide bandgap devices, and multi-objective optimization. Be well versed in various modeling and simulation programs.
- Prior power module design and packaging experience and familiarity with machine learning algorithms is preferred.
- Be familiar with optimization algorithms for development of automated design tools, and multi-objective optimization of power electronic systems.
- Network and develop collaborative R&D with other groups and divisions internally and with DOE, the industry, and the utilities.
- Prepare new proposals to the internal and external funding agencies.
- Have excellent oral and written skills for preparing and presenting research results to sponsors, peer reviewers, industry partners and others and at technical meetings such as IEEE sponsored conferences.
Basic Qualifications:
- A Ph.D. in electrical engineering or related field with a focus on power electronics applications within the past 5 years.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with advanced power semiconductor technology and its applications.
- Knowledge of CAD, FEA and system design modeling and simulation software tools is desired.
- Experience with Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning techniques is preferred.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills to make presentations to sponsors and others and to prepare reports, proposals, and publications/journal articles.
- Strong interpersonal skills to support team building and leadership.
- A publication history in prestigious international conferences and journals.
- Demonstrated publication record of scientific results in either peer-reviewed journals, or presentations at national meetings, are expected.
- Prior work experience with the industry will be valued for this position.
- A strong commitment to scientific integrity is an important requirement.
Additional Information:
Applicants cannot have received the most recent degree more than five years prior to the date of application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment.
Some travel will be required for this position.
