For more than 35 years, the BEMR Group has been using its expertise in heat, air, and moisture transport to develop and evaluate new building envelope materials and assemblies that reduce energy use, enhance occupant comfort, are moisture durable, and provide grid services. To this end, BEMR collaborates with ORNL researchers that specialize in material science, polymeric chemistry, advanced manufacturing, imaging and machine learning, advanced composites, sensors and controls, and roll-to-roll manufacturing. These collaborations also include industry partners that enable the commercialization of new technologies. Additional information about the BEUSR group is available at https://www.ornl.gov/group/building-envelope-materials-research , and details on the Building Technologies Research and Integration Center (BTRIC) is available at https://www.ornl.gov/facility/btric .
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
- Conduct analytical studies and laboratory evaluations focused on the development and evaluation of building envelope systems integrated with phase-change materials (PCM) and thermal energy storage.
- Develop whole-building models and evaluate the impact of various design variables (primarily focused on the opaque envelope) and operating conditions on energy use and moisture transfer/durability.
- Conduct thermal transport and fluid flow analysis using the finite element methods.
- Assist with proposals.
- Work within and across various ORNL groups and with researchers from universities, national laboratories, and industry.
- Publish research outcomes in peer-reviewed journals and technical reports.
- Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health, and quality program requirements.
