Job Summary
The research activities in the Department of Molecular Metabolism and its pre and postdoctoral training programs at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health concentrate on the molecular, cellular, and organismic adaptations and responses to nutrients, toxins, and radiation stress and explore the genetic basis controlling the heterogeneity of these interactions in experimental systems. The integrated interdisciplinary opportunities also aim to apply this knowledge to human populations to understand, prevent, and treat complex human diseases.
The Research Assistant (RA) will serve as a member of the research analytical platform at the Harvard Chan School to provide mass-spectrometry support for projects investigating the cell biology of lipid metabolism. Specifically, under the general supervision of the Technical Director, the RA will perform a variety of basic and general laboratory research and clerical tasks in the maintenance of the analytics platform in the Farese and Walther lab. Job-Specific Responsibilities
Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Perform mass spectrometry-based experiments utilizing specific and pre-established techniques
- Oversee maintenance of critical instruments and reagents, including: mass spectrometer, UHPLC systems, gas supplies, and related instrumentation
- Oversee ordering of reagents and consumables, primarily for mass spectrometry experiments
- Perform routine logging and testing of mass spectrometry samples
- Under direction, process, organize and keep detailed records of collected data using a variety of scientific, word processing, spreadsheet or software platforms
- Work with and under the guidelines of Harvard University policy and occupational health and safety offices to monitor research areas
- Other duties as assigned
PLEASE NOTE: This position has a term end date of two years from date of hire, with the possibility for extension.
PLEASE NOTE: Until our return to campus and full operational status, which is still to-be-determined, this interview process and position will take place in a modified manner – including virtual interviews, remote onboarding, and a combination of remote and on-site (on campus in Boston) lab work. During this time, the shifts are also likely to be irregular (potentially including weekends and off-hours) and may therefore require schedule flexibility.Basic Qualifications
- 1+ years of related experience is required; a combination of education and experience may be considered
Additional Qualifications and Skills
- Bachelor's Degree or equivalent work experience in biochemistry, chemistry, biology and/or biotechnology strongly preferred
- Experience running basic laboratory techniques preferred
- High level of initiative and motivation preferred
- Experience working independently and with a team preferred
- Excellent communication, organization, time management, and record-keeping skills preferred
