The Career Specialist is part of the Workforce Development (WFD) team and provides educational and career planning, as well as job search assistance to prospective students, enrolled students, and alumni of LWTech. Assists in the development and implementation of policies and procedures related to the Employment Resource Center (ERC) including career exploration, planning, and job search activities that are aligned with the LWTech mission, strategic plan, and Guided Pathways. Supports a seamless transition from outreach to career discernment and college enrollment. The Career Specialist works collaboratively with the WFD team, college staff and faculty, and community organizations to support student success.  This is an exempt administrative position that reports to the Assistant Director of Outreach & Employment Services. This position is contingent upon grant funding.



  • Provide career exploration, planning and job search services to prospective and enrolled students in line with LWTech Guided Pathways; assist students in making career and educational decisions, navigating college enrollment processes, and accessing resources that lead to college success

  • Administer, interpret, and evaluate vocational and career assessments

  • Provide job search services such as resume preparation, letter writing, interviewing and networking skills to individuals and groups; provide targeted career and job search support to WFD students

  • Adapt job search practices to the needs of a particular LWTech program, occupation, or industry

  • Develop and conduct workshops, seminars and presentations to assist students and potential students in their career exploration, planning and job search

  • Advise and inform college faculty, staff, student services, current students and alumni of job openings, recruiting events, and job search services for students; collaborate with faculty on preparing graduating students for employment

  • Assist in cultivating, building, and maintaining partnerships with local and regional employers; assist in recruiting incumbent workers and identifying job and internship opportunities for LWTech students and graduates

  • Develop and disseminate marketing and informational material to students, employers, and community based organizations regarding ERC and WFD services

  • Develop innovative ways to support students and increase enrollment

  • Use technology as a means to support students and alumni with career exploration and job search

  • Assist in the planning and preparation of career fairs, employer events, and other outreach events on campus; represent LWTech at regional job fairs and career events, providing information on educational and funding programs

  • Provide individual and group career counseling to increase student success

  • Represent LWTech as a liaison to WorkSource offices and other community organizations, including conducting outreach and workshops on-site.

  • Assist in college wide internal and external outreach activities; assist WFD with intake of eligible students

  • Track and report on ERC activities as well as student and employer outcomes and engagement

  • Maintain the LWTech Hire Lions job posting system, monitoring and approving employers, jobs, and students; maintain listing of current job openings

  • Develop and maintain listing of career resources; stay informed of current labor market trends; update Employment Resources Center website and other ERC resources

  • Ensure areas of responsibility operate within the policies and procedures of the College and applicable governing agencies; recommend policies and procedures related to career development and job search services that align with the mission of the college and Guided Pathways

  • Assist supervisor with department planning of goals and objectives; assist the Workforce Development Team with meeting program goals

  • Regular and satisfactory attendance and punctuality

  • Assume and effectively discharge other duties as assigned.



  • Sufficient combination of education, work, and lived experience to demonstrate ability to meet the following expectations (generally, competitive candidates will have a bachelor's degree or higher and two or more years of career services or related experience in higher education):

    • Collaboratively implement an annual career services plan

    • Work with individuals of varied ethnicity, ages, backgrounds, and abilities

    • Serve low-income, first generation, dislocated workers, displaced homemakers, and limited English speaking populations

    • Apply career discernment history

    • Use MS Office, databases, and career exploration/job search technology

    • Use technology to improve services to students

    • Assist students in navigating college entrance from career discernment to enrollment

    • Assist students in all aspects of the job search process

  • Superior ability to work as part of a team as well as independently

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills including public speaking and group facilitation

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and abilities

Salary is $3,729 per month. This is a full-time, 40 hour per week position. Working hours are typically 7:30 am - 4:30 pm Monday through Friday; some evening and weekend hours as needed. Medical, dental and insurance benefits are provided as currently administered under Public Employees Benefits Board; State Retirement Plan; vacation begins to accrue 2 day's per month and sick leave begins to accrue at 1 day per month, effective upon employment. This is an exempt, administrative year to year contract pending Grant funds.

  • Visual Requirements: close vision sufficient to read files, documents, and computer screens  and do close-up work; ability to adjust focus frequently

 Environmental/Work Conditions:

  • Frequent use of office equipment

  • Exposure to weather; corridors between building are located outdoors
