McNeese State University invites qualified applicants and nominations for the position of Dean, College of Liberal Arts. This is a full-time, 12-month, unclassified administrative position. The appointment begins in July 2018. 

Reporting Authority: Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs and Enrollment Management. Is appointed by the President of the University and the appointment is approved by the Board of Supervision of the University of Louisiana System. 

The College: The College of Liberal Arts is composed of the departments of English and Foreign Languages, History, Mass Communication, Performing Arts, Social Sciences, and Visual Arts. Curricula leading to the Associate of Arts, Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Music, Bachelor of Music Education, Bachelor of Science, Master of Arts, Master of Fine Arts, and Master of Music Education degrees, as well as special departmental requirements, are listed under the appropriate departmental and Graduate School headings. 

The University: McNeese State University, founded in 1939, has approximately 7,500 undergraduate and 1,000 graduate students. It offers graduate degrees across a range of disciplines including business, education, engineering, English, creative writing, music education, and nursing. Located in a culturally diverse area with a population of more than 180,000 (Lake Charles and suburbs), the campus encompasses over 386 acres and is conveniently located to serve students from both southwest Louisiana and southeast Texas. 

Position Description and Responsibilities: 
The Dean is expected to provide dynamic leadership in teaching, scholarly productivity, and service. The Dean is also expected to stimulate and support collegiality, as well as a productive relationship within the university community and the area business community. 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Shall be appointed by the President of the University and officially approved by the Board of Supervisors of the University of Louisiana System, Shall be responsible to the Provost.

  • Work with the appropriate constituencies to ensure accreditation standards are maintained across all College curriculum.

  • Guide the development and implementation of strategic plans for the College.

  • Implement university policies within the College and supervise development of those policies unique to the College.

  • Promote a desirable image for the College and McNeese State University and develop continuing good relations between the university and the area it serves.

  • Work with the University Foundation to develop fundraising activities for the College.

  • Maintain current records for the College.

  • Examine and analyze both the content and adequacy of the College curricula.

  • Coordinate class schedules for the College.

  • Consult with department heads on the preparation of annual budgets and consolidate departmental requests into a single budget for the college.

  • Shall be responsible for fiscal matters of the College.

  • After consulting with department heads, recommend faculty members that should be promoted, receive merit pay, be granted tenure, or be granted an official leave.

  • Oversee allotment of space and coordinates maintenance of facilities utilized by the entities within the College.

  • Teach one three-credit class during the Fall and Spring semesters.

  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Provost.

Qualifications:

  • A doctorate or terminal degree from an accredited institution in a discipline appropriate for the college programs.

  • Administrative and teaching experience relevant to the College of Liberal Arts.

  • Teaching and scholarly experience supporting eligibility for tenure within the college,

  • Evidence of successful supervision of professionals.

  • Evidence of successful interaction with students and student organizations.

  • Proven record of innovativeness and ability to foster teamwork.

  • Commitment to fostering a student-centered learning community.

  • Ability to budget and operate within allocated resources.

  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills.

  • Effective conflict resolution skills.

  • A record of significant scholarly activity at the university or college level.

  • Legally able to work in the United States.

  • Effective communicator in English.
