Reading and Developmental Education Coordinator
 
Full-time Administrative Position – 37.5 hours per week/52 weeks per year in the Department of Language & Literature
 
Location: Newtown Campus
 
This position coordinates the Reading and Academic Success Programs, as well as supports developmental education areas and initiatives in the Language & Literature Department. This position provides supports to and coordinates with the American English as a Second Language (AESL) Program, the Composition Area, and the Summer Bridge Program. Responsibilities include oversight and development of the Reading and Academic Success Programs, course scheduling, review of student placement, curriculum development, advising students, assessment, coordination across the college to support students, and coordination with county high schools and outside entities as needed.
 
Primary Responsibilities
  • Coordinate and develop the Reading and Academic Success Programs based upon current best practices.
  • Advise students, mainly Reading Level 1; advise during walk-in registration events; coordinate with faculty and professional advisors.
  • Create semester draft schedule for all Reading, COLL101 (developmental sections), and COLL115 courses.
  • Develop and revise READ curriculum in conjunction with full-time faculty.
  • Plan, schedule, and conduct several professional development activities held during the semester for all READ, COLL101 (developmental sections), and COLL115 faculty; develop training resources and provide training to faculty and staff as applicable.
  • Develop and direct acceleration programs for READ students.
  • Serve on hiring committee for part-time Reading faculty.
  • Provide mentoring to new part-time faculty.
  • Coordinate assessment activities for all Reading courses with department assessment fellow.
  • Determine reading/developmental student placement using reading and writing scores, consulting with AESL and Composition Coordinator as needed; conduct new student intake and outreach who have not registered; refer students to appropriate departments for help with navigating the registration process.
  • Answer student, parent, and faculty inquiries, such as restrictions and policies for Level I Reading students.
  • Manage enrollment and waitlist reports and assist with moving students to the appropriate courses.
  • Coordinate the Reading and AESL exit exam for courses.
  • Collaborate with the Composition and AESL Coordinators for students in the Summer Bridge Program.
  • Collect, record, and track student and program data, including but not limited to: successful completion and retention rates of students & tracking and monitoring first day screening.
  • Complete Summer Bridge program tasks, including but not limited to: document Summer Bridge Program scholarship and grant fund allocations and coordinating with appropriate departments, assist with textbook purchase and documentation for Summer Bridge Program students, assist with compilation of Summer Bridge Program surveys
  • Coordinate several programs with county high schools.
  • Represent the Reading/Developmental Education areas at College events, such as Open Houses; serve on all campus, county and state task forces related to Developmental Education as needed.
  • Keep current with best practices in developmental education.
  • Assist with current and new department programs and initiatives as applicable.
  • Meet with Area Coordinators and Department Dean as scheduled and needed.
  • Assist Area Coordinators and Dean with any additional related tasks as needed.
 
Salary range: $55,660 - 71,153 (commensurate with experience)

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Master’s in Reading or highly related field.
  • Experience teaching reading and supporting developmental reading education and AESL students.
  • Advising experience
  • Experience working with students in an educational setting
  • Assessment experience
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills, including ability to communicate with a diverse student and faculty population.
  • Ability to collaborate with support services.
  • Strong organizational and technical skills, including proficiency in MS Office, especially Word, Excel, and Outlook; ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks with minimal supervision
 
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Community college experience.
  • College teaching experience.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Experience with utilizing instructional technologies.
  • Experience with curriculum development.
  • Be available to work evening hours when needed.
 
Coordinator responsibilities are mainly fulfilled through in-person work scheduled at the Newtown Campus. Some responsibilities may be fulfilled through remote work at the discretion of the dean. Due to walk-in advising and registration schedules, hours for those weeks may vary.
